TPU Print Settings: How to Print Flexible Filament Reliably

Control speed, retraction, temperature and the filament path for cleaner, more reliable flexible TPU prints.

Flexible filament bends under compression, so the feed path and print speed matter as much as temperature. Reliable TPU printing is mostly about keeping the material controlled.

Quick answer: Use a slow 20-35 mm/s profile, low retraction, a constrained filament path and dry TPU. Start within the spool temperature range, often around 210-240 C.

Use the shortest controlled feed path

A direct-drive extruder is usually easier for TPU because the distance between drive gears and hot end is short. Bowden systems can work with firmer TPU, but need a well-constrained path.

Remove gaps where the filament can bend or escape beside the drive gear.

Slow down before changing flow

If extrusion becomes inconsistent, reduce speed before increasing flow. Flexible material can compress in the extruder and then release unevenly.

Use a steady speed for walls and infill while calibrating.

Keep TPU dry and retraction low

TPU can absorb moisture and show extra strings or a rough surface. Store TPU filament sealed with desiccant.

Excess retraction can increase jams. Tune temperature and travel first, then use the minimum effective retraction.

Design flexible parts intentionally

  • Change wall thickness to control stiffness.
  • Use infill pattern and density to tune compression.
  • Avoid tiny unsupported details.
  • Increase clearances for assemblies.
  • Print a small material coupon before the final part.
