How to Store 3D Printer Filament and Keep It Dry

Protect PLA, PETG, TPU and ASA from moisture with sealed storage, desiccant, dry boxes and careful drying.

Moisture can cause stringing, popping, rough surfaces and inconsistent extrusion even when a spool looks normal. Good storage is easier than troubleshooting a wet spool halfway through a long print.

Quick answer: Store opened spools in an airtight bag or box with active desiccant, label the opening date, and dry only with a temperature suitable for that material and spool.

Use sealed storage with desiccant

A zipper vacuum bag, gasketed storage box or dry box reduces exposure to room humidity. Add desiccant and monitor it rather than assuming it remains active forever.

Vacuum pressure removes air but does not replace drying. A damp spool sealed in a bag is still damp.

Match storage effort to the material

TPU and PETG often show moisture problems sooner than a well-stored PLA spool. Engineering materials can be even more sensitive. Keep frequently used material in a feed-through dry box when the room is humid.

ASA also benefits from sealed storage, especially when surface quality and stable extrusion matter.

Dry safely

Drying temperature varies by polymer. Excess heat can deform a plastic spool or change the material. Use the filament supplier range and a device designed for controlled drying.

Do not use a household oven unless its low-temperature control is independently verified and the equipment is suitable for the task.

Create a simple storage routine

  • Write the material and opening date on the bag or box.
  • Return the spool to sealed storage after printing.
  • Recharge or replace desiccant when its indicator changes.
  • Keep known-dry and questionable spools separate.
  • Test with a small print before a long production job.

Can a vacuum bag dry filament?

No. It slows further moisture exposure, but a wet spool normally needs controlled drying.

How long can filament stay outside?

Is brittle filament always wet?

No. UV exposure, age, chemical damage, a sharp feed path or material formulation can also contribute.
